Live Performance Returns to the 1932 Criterion Theatre!

Acadia Dance Festival seeks to to celebrate the diverse ways that dance moves through our lives and our communities, with a focus on contemporary dance in the Northeast. Our 2022 festival performance lineup will offer audiences varied opportunities to engage with contemporary dance artists from around the region.

Join us for our upcoming summer season as we bring back live dance performance! The 2022 festival will comprise of two live performances and a screening of dance on camera.

These performances and screenings will feature Maine and New England-based choreographers and companies, New Jersey-based Nimbus Dance, 2022 summer intensive students, and youth from Acadia Dance Festival’s community engagement programs at Camp Beechcliff and Summer Festival of the Arts.

Experience a week of intensive training on stage at the Criterion Theater!

Acadia Dance Festival is thrilled to offer our first-ever Summer Intensive for young dancers. This week-long program for dancers aged 15-22 offers a rigorous, creatively engaging week of contemporary dance training.

The Summer Intensive is designed for high-school and college-aged dancers who are looking to expand their training, explore their artistry, and gain experience in a professional-level dance setting. Faculty are experts in the field who have carefully crafted curriculum to help young dancers grow technically, artistically, and professionally. The program aims to contribute to the vibrancy of arts education in Downeast Maine by cultivating a new generation of engaged dance artists.

Participants will take morning class with a diverse lineup of Maine-based dance artists, benefit from a daily rotation of special topics such as injury prevention, audition skills, and improvisation techniques, and develop a piece of original choreography with company dancers from Nimbus Dance. Summer Intensive students will perform this new work in two live performances on Saturday, July 30th at the 1932 Criterion Theater alongside professional performers from the larger New York and New England region s.

Program Cost and Scholarship Information

The full cost of this week-long training experience is $500.00.

The Acadia Dance Festival is excited to make both partial and full scholarships available to participating students in order to make this opportunity more financially accessible to families and young dancers. To apply for a need-based scholarship, complete the financial aid questions at the bottom of the registration form and send required documents to acadiadf@nimbusdanceworks.org.

Detailed payment information will be made available with your welcome packet after your application is accepted. A deposit of $150.00 should be made before May 1st, 2022 and the remaining balance for the cost of the program should be paid anytime before the beginning of the intensive on July 25th.

COVID-19 Protocol

Summer Intensive Students are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start of the 2022 program. Masking will be required for the duration of indoor dancing.

Additionally, students and families are expected to follow practices around COVID-19 in alignment with protocols adopted by Criterion Theatre at the time of the program. The Acadia Dance Festival reserves the right to shift COVID-19 protocol as new information emerges or as the Maine CDC publishes new recommendations. We greatly appreciate all participants’ cooperation in ensuring the safety of our creative community

Bring your work to the festival this summer!

The Acadia Dance Festival is seeking submissions for its 2022 season. Opportunities are available for live performance and dance film screenings.

Two live performances will be offered at the 1932 Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor, Maine on Saturday, July 30th. Accepted submissions will be placed in one of these performances. A modest honorarium will be offered to live performers. There is a $20.00 application fee for a live performance submission.

A screening of dance films from the New England and New York will be offered in Bar Harbor and virtually on Friday, July 29th at 7pm. Film submissions will be considered for three awards with small prizes. There is a $10.00 application fee for a dance film submission.
