PRODUCTION MANAGER

Position Overview: The Production Manager will oversee all technical, logistical, and operational elements required to execute dance company performances, school showcases, outside rental shows using the Nimbus’ theaters, and special events. The Production Manager also oversees inventory, maintenance, and functionality of theater and studio spaces. This role ensures productions run safely, efficiently, and on schedule, while supporting artistic vision, dancer and student experience, and organizational goals. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

 

Production Planning & Coordination 

• Plan, schedule, and manage production timelines for school performances and showcases, company performances, rental events, and special events.
• Coordinate all production elements including lighting, sound, staging, props, and backstage operations.
• Serve as the primary point of contact between Artistic Director, School Directors, Rental Manager, rental clients, and other Nimbus staff.
• Advance Communication with tour venues regarding tech/logistics.
• Create and distribute tech/production schedules to appropriate Nimbus staff
• Oversee pack list of all production equipment, tools, props, costumes, dance flooring, marley,  ect. for off-site performances and tours.
• Oversee load‑in, load‑out, packing of van or truck, technical rehearsals, and event execution for internal and external productions.
• Coordinate with company manager and rehearsal director on tour travel schedule
• Drive the van for Nimbus Company when traveling for shows or transporting equipment for satellite events
• Maintain archives of lighting designs and cue sheets for company repertory
• Assemble music files and playlists for all Nimbus performances and productions (including School of Nimbus Dance performances)

 

Technical & Stage Management 

• Lead technical rehearsals, cueing, and backstage operations for all productions. 
• Operate and maintain lighting, sound, projection, and stage equipment; troubleshoot issues during rehearsals and performances. 
• Create and distribute cue sheets, run‑of‑show documents, backstage assignments, and technical notes.
• Ensure proper setup of marley floors, spike marks, props, lighting, and staging for each performance, showcase, special event or rental event. 
• Serve as timekeeper during technical & dress rehearsals, production run-throughs and prior/during performances.

 

Theater & Studio Operations 

• Oversee functionality of the theater, studio spaces, and production booth, ensuring they are safe, clean, and production‑ready. 
• Manage inventory of technical equipment, props, tools, supplies, and storage areas. 
• Coordinate repairs, replacements, and preventative maintenance for lighting instruments, sound systems, marley, genie-lift, tools, and production equipment. 
• Maintain studio equipment including sound systems, marley floor taping, and safety features.
• Enforce safety procedures for dancers, staff, crew, and rental clients during rehearsals, performances, and load‑ins and outs.

Rental Production Support

• Serve as the technical liaison for outside rental clients using the theater or studios.
• Provide renters with clear guidelines, technical specifications, and venue policies.
• Support renters with load‑in, technical setup, cueing, and event execution as contracted.
• Ensure rental clients adhere to safety protocols, facility rules, and equipment usage standards

 

Communication, Collaboration

• Work effectively in group settings, contributing to a positive, cooperative production environment.
• Provide clear, timely communication to colleagues and other performer stakeholders, instructors, dancers, and rental clients.
• Lead backstage volunteers, student helpers, and technical crew with professionalism and teamwork.
• Demonstrate self‑motivation by anticipating needs, solving problems independently, and taking initiative without constant direction.

 

Required Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in group settings and independently with strong self‑motivation.
• Experience in production management, stage management, or technical theater (dance experience preferred).
• Ability to operate and maintain lighting, sound, LCD projectors, genie-lift, and stage equipment.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple productions and deadlines.
• Knowledge of industry-standard software like Vectorworks and QLab
• Knowledge of basic lighting design, sound editing, or stagecraft.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and event‑heavy periods.
• Ability to lift, move, or set up production equipment (up to 40 lbs).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in dance, performing arts education, or youth‑centered environments.
• OSHA certification for operating a genie lift
• Experience in Lighting Design for dance
• Familiarity with dance‑specific production needs (quick changes, marley floors, spike marks, prop safety).
• Experience supporting rental clients or managing venue operations.

Hours:

This position requires  schedule flexibility and often requires evenings and weekends and occasional overnight travel on tour with Nimbus Dance Company.

 

Physical Demands:

The job requires regular bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, and climbing; often lifting and moving heavy items, gear, or scenic elements weighing between 30 and 50 pounds independently, and up to 100 pounds with assistance or team lifts.

 

Work Environment:

The Production Manager splits their time between office-based work with moderate noise and traditional and untraditional performance venues, including theaters, studio settings, and outdoor events. This position requires the ability to navigate an assortment of environments, including those with low or high sound volumes, bright or dim lighting, and tight spaces.
