Artistic worlds collide for this fascinating dialogue featuring Blakeley White-McGuire, former star of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Samuel Pott, Founding Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance, and Dr. Jeff Friedman, Professor of Dance Studies at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Ms. White-McGuire will read from and discuss her recently published book The Martha Graham Dance Company: House of the Pelvic Truth, a dancer’s perspective exploration of one of the great artistic voices of the 20th century and her pervasive influence on generations of Graham dancers and on the dance field. The event coincides with the October 7 world premiere of Pott’s Spring at NJPAC, set to the music of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and commissioned for the New Jersey Symphony’s 100th Anniversary Season. Moderated by Dr. Friedman, Pott and White-McGuire, who were dance partners in Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring, discuss this iconic masterpiece, its significance in relation to American hope and identity, and the artistic thread of Martha Graham’s influence.
